PEPFAR disburses K1.5M for HIV/AIDS programs

The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the support of the American people has disbursed a total of K1.5 million to sixteen community based organizations involved in HIV/AIDS related programs.

Speaking during the Small Grants Awards Workshop in Lusaka today, United States Mission Charge D’Affaires David Young says the small grant program focuses on providing opportunities for orphans and vulnerable children to grow and be able to make positive contributions to Zambia’s future as well as HIV Prevention.

Mr. Young says the organizations that have been awarded the grants are addressing a broad range of community needs and reaching many people affected by HIV including Orphans and Vulnerable children, people leaving with HIV AIDS among others.

Mr Young adds that the organizations are also helping the governments of Zambia and the United States to achieve their mutual priorities in support of Zambia’s HIV response.

And National Aids Council (NAC) Director General, Jabbin Mulwanda has appealed to other partners to emulate PEPFAR and invest at community level and help change lives for the better.

Dr. Mulwanda has also encouraged other funding partners providing similar small grants to utilize National Systems such as the Sub-Granting mechanism that the National Aids Council has developed.

He has further urged the receipts of the awards to continue working hard towards creating hope of achieving an AIDS free generation.
