Nkana dump Power from Barclays Cup

Nkana breezed to the 2014 Barclays Cup semifinals after beating archrivals Power Dynamos 2-0 on Sunday at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

The victory sent Nkana to their first semifinal appearance since 2011 as they continue to search for an elusive first Barclays Cup final appearance on the fifth attempt.

Both sides got the match off to a flying start with Power testing Nkana as early as the first minute when striker Jimmy Ndhlovu saw his close-range shot saved by Rabson Muchelenganga.

Nkana were unfortunate not to take the lead twice before the first five minutes had elapsed when Joshua Titima parried Ronald Kampamba’s third-minute shot and saved Festus Mbewe’s fifth-minute effort.

However, Kampamba punished Power in the 18th minute when he chipped the ball over Titima off a cheeky pass from Simon Bwalya.

Nkana were not done and just two minutes later added the second and final goal through midfielder Kelvin Mubanga who whipped in a sublime free kick.

Kampamba had a great opportunity to record a brace in the 35th minute but miscued his close-range shot and elected instead to deliver the ball inches wide of the near post.

Power were second best from there on and their best chance came in the 61st minute when striker Alex Ngonga’s diving header flashed across the face of Nkana’s goalmouth.

Tennant Chilumba’s sides were reduced to ten men in the 77th minute when defender Billy Mutale was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Nkana striker Lottie Nyimbili.

Meanwhile, Nkana join Konkola Blades, three-time winners Zesco United and 2012 champions Napsa Stars in the semifinals.
