JCTR calls for more investment in manufacturing sector

The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) says there is need to invest in the local manufacturing sector in order to address the high cost of essential commodities.

JCTR Programme Officer Social and Economic Development, Musonda Kabinga says the high cost of essential commodities can be attributed to the country’s over dependence on imports.

He says this has resulted in the continued high cost of living because the cost of essential goods and services has continued to go up.

Mr. Kabinga explains that the high cost of imports is passed on to the consumers who are mostly poor Zambians through high commodity prices.

He says there is urgent need for investment in the local manufacturing sector as it will translate into reduced prices for essential goods and services.

Mr Kabinga adds that investing in local manufacturing will not only help reduce the prices of basic commodities but will also create jobs for the local people.
