Lungu calls for more awareness on ombudsman

Justice Minister Edgar Lungu has called for more awareness on the operations of the country’s Commission for Investigations.

Mr. Lungu says this is because most people do not understand the purpose of the Commission for Investigations that of being an ombudsman and promoter of good governance.

Mr. Lungu was speaking this morning when he met visiting members of the Executive Committee of the African Ombudsmans and Mediators Association (AOMA) at his office in Lusaka.

He says it is his hope that while the Executive Committee of AOMA meet in Lusaka to prepare for the association’s 4th General Assembly scheduled to will take place in Addis Ababa on 10th October, 2014, Zambia’s Commission for investigations will be further brought into the limelight.

Mr. Lungu, who was franked by Investigator General, Caroline Sokoni and Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General Bridget Atanga, has observed that with such a high profile visit of the AOMA Executive Committee, he is confident that when more people get to learn about the operations of the country’s office of ombudsman, more people will begin to access its services.

The Justice Minister has further noted the need for the Commission for investigations not to operate in isolation as it is in a way part of the Ministry of Justice even though it operates independently.

And OAMA president who is also former ombudsman for Angola, Paulo Tjipilica thanked Mr Lungu for accepting to meet his Executive Committee.

He also presented Mr. Lungu with the MoU recently signed between OAMA and the International Association of Ombudsmen and Mediators.

And Dr. Tjipilica, who later chose to speak in French in his own capacity as an Angola citizen through an interpreter, has also noted the safe haven Zambia provided to people of his country during the time of hardships.

He says Zambia has been and still is a home for many Angolans.
