PF recommends deletion of “Christian” in Constitution Amendment Bill

The ruling Patriotic Front has recommended the deletion of the word Christian in Article 4 of the Constitution Amendment Bill no.10 of 2019.

PF Secretary General Davies Mwila says while his party supports the idea that Zambia remains a Christian nation, it still believes other minority religions in the Country should be protected.

Appearing before the parliamentary select committee scrutinizing the Constitution amendment bill no.10, Mr. Mwila submitted that the PF therefore recommends that the word multi-religious be retained in the preamble of the proposed Constitution Amendment Bill.

Ad Mr. Mwila says the PF is in support of the proposal to change the electoral system for election of Members of Parliament under Article 47 of the Bill to include mixed member representation.

He states that his party further recommend that the word oversees in Article 63 be replaced with provide checks and balances pertaining to the role of Parliament.

The PF Secretary General has also maintained his party’s opposition to the introduction of Deputy Ministers in government.

Mr Mwili says the PF further wants the Republican President to be elected by majority Zambians and therefore opposes the provision for a coalition government in the Bill.
