Zambia signs African Continental Free Trade Area

President Edgar  Lungu has signed the African Continental Free Trade Area(AFCFTA).

President Lungu signed the Protocol which was witnessed his Excellency Albert m. Muchanga, African Union Commissioner for Trade and Industry, signed on behalf of the African Union.

The president said Zambia will now work towards necessary processes required to ratify the agreement.

He said Zambia recognized the importance of the agreement as it was one that would liberalize trade of both goods and services for all African countries .

Zambia witnessed the declaration of the AFCTA in Kigali Rwanda in 2018.

President Lungu said as a committed member of the African union Zambia will Endeavour  to implement programs and projects of the AU.

The AFCTA will now be sent for ratification through Zambia’ institutional mechanism.

Meanwhile President Edgar Lungu has called for robust and innovative financing mechanisms to drive the agenda for universal health coverage in Africa.

President Lungu has also called on governments to increase domestic funding for the health sector.

He urged countries to strengthen partnerships with multilateral institutions and the private sector.

President Lungu has emphasized that human capital development would culminate in sustainable economic and social development.

He says it is imperative that Africa developed resilient health systems in order to deliver universal health care.

In a speech read by Zambia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, President Lungu stated that he  is an ardent advocate for universal health coverage.

Dr. Chilufya was speaking at the  Africa leadership meeting held under the theme: “Investing In Health To Realize the Africa We Want”.

The high-level meeting  brought together the world’s stakeholders in the health sector from public and private institutions.

The meeting; Africa leadership meeting investing in health, held under the auspices of the African Union,  and was chaired by AU Chairperson, Rwanda’s President.

Other key speakers included Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta , United Nations Secretary General, Paul Guterres and Ethiopia’s President, Sahle-Work Zewde Norway’s Prime Minister, Erna Solberg.
