19 Namuseche Correctional Center escapees still at large

Twenty 21 remandees from Namuseche Correctional Center have escaped from Lawful custody.

The breakout happened after the 21 remandees were taken from Namuseche Correctional Centre to attend a Mobile Court at Mambwe District in Eastern Province on the 26th December, 2018 .

The remandees escaped on th 28th December,2018 from a Department of National Parks and Wild Life Police cell in which they were locked.

Ministry of Home Affairs public relations officer Nephas Chifuta has confirmed in a statement the remandees used an arc saw blade to cut off the burglar bars of the cell’s window.

Mr. Chifuta states that Department of National Parks and Wild Life in conjunction with the Zambia Police have since managed to re-arrest three remandees while 19 of them are still on the run.

He says the 11 of them were  arrested and charged for Wild Life related offences, while 4 of them for general theft and 2 of them for Defilement.

Mr. Chifuta says the remaining three were arrested for Motor Vehicle theft,  for Burglary and Theft for use of insulting language respectively.

He has since appealed to the relatives of the escapees and members of the public to report to the Police anyone seen in their vicinity or any suspicious individuals idling about.
