ZRL announces temporal closure of Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line

Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) has announced a temporary closure on the Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line.

This is owing the damage caused by heavy rains on both the Zambian and Malawian side.

ZRL Acting Public Relations Manager Sombe Ng’onga has told Q-News in a statement that the damage has also affected movement of trains on the Nacala Corridor in general.

Ms. Ng’onga states that the ZRL has however dispatched engineers to Chipata to assess the extent of the damage and to determine remedial works necessary to restore the line.

She says her company is therefore assuring its clients and members of the public that it is working round the clock to ensure normal operations are restored within the shortest time possible.

Ms. Ng’onga has appealed to ZRL customers, who may be affected by the closure of the Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line, to exercise patience as it carries out the restoration works.

The ZRL run the Chipata-Mchinji Railway line on a stretch of 24 km from Chipata in the Eastern province connecting with CEAR Railways in Malawi and CDN Railways of Mozambique up to the Port of Nacala.
