Magande doubtful ConCourt ruling will impact economy

Former Minister of Finance Ng’andu Magande has expressed doubt Friday’s ruling of the Constitutional Court will have an immediate impact on the Zambian economy.

Mr. Magande says the ruling was only an interpretation of the Zambian constitution that touched on the 2021 elections and President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility to contest the elections.

In an interview Mr. Magande has told Q-News the fact that the Court ruled that President Lungu can stand in 2021 does not also mean that he will actually contest the election.

Mr. Magande, who served as Cabinet Minister during the Patrick Mwanawasa MMD government, says President Lungu has to pronounce himself whether he is going to stand or not.

He states that it is at this point that there can be an impact on the economy if President Lungu says it himself and people react to his pronouncement.

Mr. Magande notes that there is , in this case, a possibility that President Lungu may not stand and therefore there cannot be an impact on the Zambia economy arising from the Court’s ruling.

He says this is especially that the ruling had nothing to do with any Cabinet Minister or Ministry or any sector of the Country’s economy.
