Zambia vs Gunvor arbitral proceedings in London – Chola

Arbitral proceedings have begun in a matter Zambia has been sued in the Permanent Court of Arbitration(PCA) by oil trading company Gunvor of South Africa over an oil deal.

Energy Permanent Secretary Emelda Chola has confirmed that proceedings are being heard in London, United Kingdom (UK).

Emeldah-Chola In an interview by telephone Brigadier General Chola has told QTV News the matter dates back to 2015 when Zambia refused to accept contaminated crude oil supplied by Gunvor.

Brigadier General Chola notes that in that year the Zambian government had also terminated the contract it signed with Gunvor to supply 100,000 metric tons of crude oil.

She says she could however not give any further details on the case as it is being handled by the office of the Attorney General under the  Ministry of Justice.

A case list posted on the PCA website shows that the matter is pending and is of the nature of contract based arbitration and that UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules 2010 are the rules being used in the proceedings.

In this case Zambia is being represented by Attorney General Likando Kalaluka, Joe Simachela and  Francis Mwale while Gunvor has Paul Taylor, Miranda Hearn and  Hill Dickinson as its representatives.

The arbitral proceedings begun on the 6th of February in 2017.
