The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) says it has not recorded any case of Ebola from persons of concern entering Zambia from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

UNHCR field officer and team leader Richard Kakooza says this is despite the spread of the disease in the DRC.

Mr Kakooza has told Q-news in an interview at Kenani transit center in Nchelenge district of Luapula province that they are however on high alert in view of the spread of Ebola outbreak in the DRC.

Meanwhile Zambia is hosting up to 73, 674 persons of concern as of April 2018.

Of the 73, 674, 42 persons of concern, 42,419 are Congolese of which 20, 674 have been shared as 3,100 in Lusaka,  2,  228 at Maheba in Solwezi District and  15, 449 at Mantapala refugee settlement in Nchelenge District.

Our staffer Lazarous Sichula is in Nchelenge and spoke to the UNHCR field officer and team leader in the area, Richard Kakooza who disclosed that there has been a decline in the number of persons of concern entering Zambia and hosted at Kenani transit center from an average of 60 to 20 individuals per week.

Mr. Kakooza says the decline is attributed to relative stability in the DRC.

He has further disclosed that a total of 528 persons of concern from the DRC were on Wednesday moved from Kenani transit center to Mantapala Refugee settlement bringing the total number of settled persons to 5, 156.

This is the first transportation since the movement of persons of concern from the Kanani transit center was halted during the rainy season.
