The ruling Patriotic Front (PF) has accused the Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) of trying to politicize the conviction of former Chilanga Member of Parliament Keith Mukata.

This comes after parliament’s decision to declare Mr. Mukata’s seat vacant following the nullification of his parliamentary seat.

PF Media Director Sunday Chanda says the party is aware that UPND wants to take to Parliament a motion alleging bias by the Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Patrick Matibini  for declaring the Chilanga seat vacant while retaining Munali and Lusaka Central.

Mr. Chanda alleges that UPND seeks to conveniently politicize Mr. Mukata’s conviction, which falls under the ambit of criminal law by raising Munali and Lusaka Central petitions when Articles 70, 71 and 72 of the amended Constitution provides clarity with regard to the decision by the Speaker.

Mr. Chanda says the opposition has exhibited a sense of indignity by pretending to care for Mr. Mukata after his conviction when it is in public domain that they neglected him when he needed them the most.

He laments that it is therefore hypocritical of the UPND to pretend they now care when their concern is the seat and not the person.
