Government has commissioned the 15 Million Kwacha Chanida, Mwami, Mchinji water supply and sanitation project that will ease and improve the provision of water to communities across the borders.

The design of the project was jointly Implemented by Eastern Water and Sewerage Company and the Central water board of Malawi and it involves drilling of boreholes and connecting surrounding houses to water reticulation, putting up water kiosks and construction of border sanitation facilities.

Water Development, sanitation and Environmental Protection Permanent Secretary Ed Chomba who commissioned the project at Mwami border on the Zambian side said the beneficiaries are not only people from Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique living within the border towns, but the traveling public.

Dr. Chomba says the water kiosks and doorstep water supply services being provided shall reduce the amount of valuable time women and children take to draw water, mostly from unsafe sources.

He adds that there are over one thousand travelers daily, accessing the two border posts of Chanida and Mwami into and from Malawi and Mozambique.

The Permanent Secretary has since thanked the British Government, through the Department of International Development for the finances and the Climate Resilience Infrastructure Development facility for being the fund manager.

Meanwhile, Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo says because of the fragility of the consequences of lack of hygiene and the vulnerability of border areas, Mwami and Chanida Border areas were among locations his administration submitted for support.
