Bwana Mkubwa Member of Parliament Dr. Jonas Chanda has expressed concern that Hotel Management at the government-owned Mukuba Hotel in Ndola, located in Bwana Mkubwa Constituency, is subjecting its workers to slave-like work conditions and is acrimonious to workers demands and rights.

Dr Chanda says he is aware that Mukuba Hotel Management is not paying the workers the service charge for many months now, in addition to subjecting them to unexplained salary delays even for their meager wages, and dismissing them from work or being threatened with expulsion for simply airing these grievances through their Branch Hotel Workers Union representatives.

Dr Chanda says the “Service Charge” to the workers is not only covered by the law through the Hotel Act passed by Parliament, but is also in the collective agreement and work contracts signed between Hotel Management and the Workers.

He has further expressed concern that workers’ Gratuities going back as far as 2015, ranging from K4, 000 to K15, 000, have not been paid to a single worker, with some employees being owed gratuity for two contracts.

The Bwana Mkubwa Member of Parliament has since called on Mukuba Hotel Management to respect and engage the Branch Union of Hotel Workers, and avoid making promises on which they U-turn every time with no valid explanation.
