The New Congress Party has charged that the largest opposition united party for national development (UPND) has a difficult relationship with democracy because its leader has been in office for a long time.

Party Leader Peter Chanda feels that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema does not act democratically.

He has explained that the UPND leader Mr. Hichilema has been party president for a long time now and wondered how he can fight for democracy in such authoritarian ways.

Mr. Chanda has charged that as long as UPND does not go for a convention it seems to be slowly slipping back into a one man’s show.

He has since challenged the UPND to prove that they are democratic by going for a national convention to elect torch bearers for the 2021 tripartite elections.

Mr. Chanda tells q-news that as long as UPND refuses to go for a convention, it should not talk about Zambia’s democracy.

Meanwhile Mr. Chanda has accused opposition Leader Hakainde Hichilema of peddling lies and falsehood that Zambia is revolving under an undemocratic government to the international community.

He has expressed disappointment that a Zambia national could travel abroad and speak ill of the country especially on remarks based on lies and falsehood.

And Mr. Chanda has welcomed speaker of the national assembly Patrick Matibini’s decision to declare the Chilanga seat held by UPND’s Keith Mukata vacant.

He says this is because the people of Chilanga need parliamentary representation as it had no effective parliamentary representation for close to a year now.

On Wednesday speaker of the national assembly Patrick Matibini declared the Chilanga seat held by UPND’s Keith Mukata and has since written to the chairperson of the electoral commission of Zambia asking the commission to start making arrangements for a by election.
