The opposition green party has opposed government’s intentions to develop a nuclear power plant with a capacity to generate about 2,000 megawatts of electricity.

Party president peter sinkamba says the insistence by government to go ahead to set up a nuclear power plant is extremely distressing.

Mr. Sinkamba says government should not think that managing nuclear waste is like managing cholera.

He says the major challenge with nuclear power plants is making nuclear fuel safer after the power has been generated.

Mr. Sinkamba explains that nuclear fuel remains dangerously radioactive for thousands of years after it is no longer useful in a commercial reactor.

He has stated that this is more reason why serious leaders across the globe shy away from building nuclear power stations.

Mr. Sinkamba feels that zambia lacks capacity to sustainably manage nuclear fuel waste.
