Mwanza calls for the deregistration of political parties

Isaac MwanzaGovernance activist Isaac Mwanza has called for the deregistration of political parties that have failed to comply with the Constitution requirement to hold intraparty elections forthwith.

And Mr. Mwanza has called on the government to begin tabling Bills in Parliament meant to give effect to certain provisions in the Constitution that have not yet been effected.

Mr Mwanza, who is also Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Governance Advisor, says Section 18 of Act No 1 of 2016 requires that political parties comply with the Constitution as amended on all provisions that relate to them or risk being deregistered.

He says the Constitution gave a grace period of 12 months for political parties to comply with provisions such as Article 60 Clause 2 (a) and (d) that require that political parties have a national character and hold regular, free and fair elections within their parties.

Mr Mwanza is saddened that political parties have defied the supreme law of the land by allowing leaders who have made themselves Supreme leaders instead of holding elections as per requirements of the Constitution.
