Governance, Elections, Advocacy, and Research Services (GEARS) Initiative Zambia has challenged the government through the Ministry of Justice to tell the nation when the Technical Committee on refining the constitution was constituted and its terms of reference.

GEARS Initiative Zambia Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi says it is important that the ministry furnishes the nation with details on when this technical committee was appointed, its role or mandate, when it is expected to conclude its work and the names and institutions where the members of the committee are coming from.

Mr. Chipenzi tells QTV News that it is worrying to simply hear that the technical committee was meeting to relook at the constitution without informing the nation about its existence.

He also wonders what will happen to the submissions that various stakeholders made towards the refinement of the constitution, noting that it is clear from the resolutions and recommendations made by the committee that it is not considering the submissions that were made.

Mr. Chipenzi has cited the issue of ministers remaining in office after the dissolution of parliament and the president holding on to power when there is a presidential election petition among others.

Mr. Chipenzi feel this whole process will put the constitution making process into jeopardy and that it will create more controversies in the process.
