The Lusaka High Court has sentenced Chilanga Member of Parliament Keith Mukata to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murder.

Mr Mukata and his co-accused Chairmaine Musonda who has since been acquitted stood charged with the murder of Namakambwa Kalila kwenda 63, a security guard from Men in Black Security Company who was shot dead while guarding AKM Legal Practitioners owned by the Chilanga MP.

Delivering judgment in the matter, High Court Judge Susan Wenjelani found Mr Mukata guilty of murder in line with section 200 of the penal code.

Particulars of the offence are that the duo jointly and whilst acting together did murder Namakabwa Kwenda, 63, a security guard of Lusaka’s Ngombe Township, at Mukata’s law firm in Rhodes Park on May 6, 2017.

Mr Mukata and his co-accused were alleged to have shot Kalilakwenda, but in his moving testimony, Mr Mukata told the court that his security guard was shot by an intruder.

In mitigation, his lawyers pleaded with the court for leniency saying their clients was a familiy man and was supporting an orphanage.

Meanwhile Mr Mukata remained composed even after the sentence was pronounced.
