Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba says government is considering moving the deadline for public service buses to have seat belts from January 2019 to January 2022.

Mr. Mushimba says this is because discussions on having all buses fitted with seat belts have been very slow and are being met with challenges.

He explains that one of the challenges is that most of the buses being used for public transport in the country were not designed for transporting people and therefore they did not come with seat belt provisions or provisions that can see a seat belt being fitted.

Mr Mushimba has however, stated that the ministry is having ongoing conversations with stakeholders in the public transport sector, though he was quick to mention that these conversations might not be concluded by 2019.
