ZCTU demands reopening of CBU, UNZA

ZCTU-houseThe Zambia congress of trade unions (ZCTU) is demanding for the immediate reopening of the university and reinstatement of all affected lecturers and management should ensure that these lecturers are paid what is owed to them.

ZCTU director public relations and international affairs martin Chembe expressed concerned by the prolonged delay by government to reopen public universities in the country.

Mr. Chembe says the delay is detrimental to the career development of the students in these universities whose progress has been negatively affected because the prolonged delay to have the institutions reopen is a big disturbance on the calendar of their programmes.

He has advised government to take a fresh look at this matter and urgently act in the interest of the institutions, the students, their parents and the nation as a whole.

Mr. Chembe is of the view that government is not attaching much importance to the welfare of these institutions despite the fact that most of those in positions of authority today, passed through these institutions which they are ignoring now.

He has asked government to realize that university education is key to opening the door to the future of the nation and to help overcome the persisting evils of poverty, ignorance and diseases the country is facing.

Mr. Chembe has challenged government to come in the open and tell the nation if it does not have sufficient funds to reopen the universities, instead of hiding under poor sanitary condition as compelling reasons for keeping them shut.

He has since urged government to work out practical measures which will offer solutions to the challenges facing public universities and we urge government to engage in social dialogue with workers instead of taking fixed positions that favour employers all the time.
