New Zamtel communication towers launched in Luapula

Communications and Transport Minister Brian Mushimba has today launched the new Zamtel communication towers in Luapula province which will improve connectivity for customers in the province.

The new towers are part of the 1,009 sites to be installed across the country at a total cost of US$280 million.

Speaking when he launched the towers in Mansa today, Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba says government is committed to increasing access to reliable and affordable communication services across the country.

He says the project to erect communications towers is firmly in line with the government’s objective to provide and make possible universal access to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in line with the 7th National Development Plan.

Mr Mushimba says the completion of the project will result in increased mobile phone penetration from the current 70% to almost 100% as well as increase in data service penetration from 5% to 40%.

He adds that the project will further increase connectivity for enterprises as well as enable rural farmers easier access to markets for their products.

Speaking earlier,Zamtel Chief Executive Officer Sydney Mupeta said the site launched today is one of the 82 sites that are currently being rolled out in Luapula province.

He says once completed, the sites will play a key role in promoting economic development and improving the lives of the people.
