General Education Permanent Secretary Henry Tukombe says the ministry is considering engaging volunteers to help out in teaching in rural schools while the ministry considers employing more teachers.

Mr. Tukombe has acknowledged that schools in rural areas have inadequate teachers, a situation that compromises the quality of education for pupils.

He says the ministry is considering engaging school leavers with good results to help out in teaching primary school pupils in the rural communities.

Mr Tukombe says the volunteers will be put on small salaries that will help sustain them.

He has however, stated that the ministry is also considering increasing the number of teachers that are recruited so as to address the challenge of inadequate teachers in rural areas.

Recently, Senior Chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni people in Chipata expressed concern over the inadequate teachers in schools across his chiefdom, with some primary schools having three teachers attending to all grades.
