COMESA deploys election observer mission in Rwanda

COMESA has deployed a short-term election observer mission to the Presidential elections in Republic of Rwanda to be held on 4th August 2017.

The COMESA delegation, arrived in Kigali, Rwanda on Thursday 27th July 2017, and is led by Bishop Mary Nkosi, a member of the COMESA Committee of Elders.

In a statement issued to QTV News today, Bishop Nkosi says the observers include officials from COMESA Member States, diplomatic missions accredited to COMESA and staff from the COMESA Secretariat, who will be in the country until 6 August, 2017.

Bishop Nkosi says during this period, they will observe the concluding stages of the pre-election activities including voting, vote counting and declaration of election results, and the immediate post-election period.

She says as part of its objectives, the delegation will consult electoral stakeholders that include political parties, security, the election management body, civil society and media, among others.

She adds that the observation process will be guided primarily by the constitution and legal framework of Rwanda, as read with relevant international and regional instruments including the COMESA Guidelines on Election Observation.

Bishop Nkosi says the COMESA Electoral Observation Mission welcomes this opportunity to contribute to the democratic process in the Republic of Rwanda and looks forward to the cooperation of all people of Rwanda.
