Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya says Malaria is an impediment to development and therefore should not be taken lightly as an ordinary disease.

Speaking when he officiated the opening of the southern Africa Malaria Elimination Eight Initiative today, Dr. Chilufya says there is need to completely eliminate the disease by carrying out critical interventions such as indoor residue spraying and vector control.

Dr. Chilufya notes that the disease has killed a lot of women and under five children, thereby placing a heavy burden on the country’s health system.

He has urged scientists to source for evidence that will move the vector control agenda in the southern region.

Dr. Chilufya states that Zambia is going to engage community health agents beyond southern province this year, to participate in the malaria elimination agenda as they have been identified as a vital force in the provision of primary healthcare services.

He adds that it is important to invest in human resource for health, as well as infrastructure for primary healthcare and health information management systems and technology.
