Equity and Economic Party (EEP) President Chilufya Tayali says President Edgar Lungu should abandon plans to build a new and modern State House.

Mr. Tayali says the revelations by Works and Supply Minister Mathew Nkhuwa that government wants to spend about US$20 million on constructing a new State House is worrying, disturbing and saddening.

Mr. Tayali says this is the project that late president Sata rejected when he came into office in 2011 which President Lungu’s administration wants to embark on.

He wonders why President Lungu’s administration is insisting on building a new State House when the nation is almost draining in debt and poverty.

He recalls that when President Sata just came into power he cancelled a contract to build a new State House and the construction of a new international airport which was supposed to be constructed by Chinese company, Shanghai Construction Group General Company and a Turkish company, respectively.

He argues that President Sata said the country’s current State House is more than adequate and wondered why the former MMD government had decided to embark on an expensive venture of building another State House.

The EEP Leader says President Lungu should be ashamed of himself for his Government to be coming up with such projects when Zambia is wallowing in serious debts and poverty.
