The Human Rights Commission has expressed concern over the continued discrimination and degrading remarks against women with disabilities.

Commission Chairperson Mudford Mwandenga says women with disabilities are stigmatized by healthcare providers when seeking sexual reproductive health services from health institutions.

Mr. Mwandenga has also noted that accessing services from public institutions such as hospitals, court buildings, police stations, among others has been a huge challenge for persons with disabilities.

In a speech read on his behalf by HRC Commissioner, Ackson Zulu, when he officiated at a workshop on the Rights of persons with disabilities Mr. Mwandenga says the Commission is also worried with the continued trend where some visually impaired persons wishing to buy from public or private shops have been denied entry.

He says these forms of discrimination against people with disabilities are a source of grave concern to the Commission.

Speaking at the same event, Community Development and Social Services Minister Emerine Kabanshi says government has made significant steps towards improving the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
