Sinkamba partners with Butondo residents to sue govt

Green party president peter Sinkamba says he will this week help affected Butondo residents in Mufulira to sue government for compensation in respect to the 2012 acid mist pollution from Mopani copper mines.

Following a major acid mist pollution incidence that occurred in Mufulira’s Butondo Township in February 2012, emitted from Mopani Copper Mines, medical doctors established that the emissions had severely impacted the health of over 200 households in Butondo Township.

Following this discovery the medical doctors recommended for the compensation and relocation of the affected households from the hazardous area but almost five years and five months have elapsed since the pollution incidence and nothing has been done by Government to have the affected households compensated and relocated from the hazardous location as recommended by the medical experts

It is against this background that Earlier this month,mr Sinkamba gave government an ultimatum of seven days to release the report which it withheld, to the affected persons, as well as facilitate their compensation according to findings and recommendations of the medical experts which has since elapsed.

Mr. Sinkamba has since told Q news that he will this week assist the residents file in their case to the high court as a way of seeking redress before their legitimate claim becomes statute barred.

Mr. Sinkamba has explained that the affected persons in Butondo Township have remained with only about six months to go before their claim for becomes stale or bad at law which means that they will completely lose out on the compensation.

He has expressed disappoint at how government through the office of the vice president has decided to neglect the people of Butondo without compensating them.
