The Zambia under-20 national soccer team has progress to the quarter finals of the ongoing Fifa under-20 world cup in South Korea after beating Germany by 4 goals to 3 after extra time.

It is the first time Zambia has progressed to this stage at this level.

The African under-20 Champions trailed Germany by a goal to nil going into the break before taking a 3-1 lead in the second half with goals from Emanuel Banda, Fashion Sakala and Enock Mwepu.

The junior Chipolopolo could however not hold on to their comfortable lead as sloppy defending allowed Germany to come back into game with two late goals in the 89th minute and in the referee’s additional time, sending the game into extra time.

It was ZESCO United defender Shemmy Mayembe’s goal in the 107th that ensured Zambia booked a place in the quarters were they will meet either Italy or France.

And President Edgar Lungu has commended the Zambia Under-20 National team for their victory over Germany in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 match.

President Lungu says the Junior Chipolopolo has continued to show the nation an example of the power of unity and purpose.

He says the journey to ultimate glory seems assured going by the dedication the team has continued to display.

President Lungu has since encouraged the players and the technical bench to continuously set their eyes on the ball in the ongoing campaign to lift the World Cup.
