Stop consultations on ICC, Govt told

Government has been asked to discontinue consultations on whether Zambia should remain a member of the International Criminal Court or leave in view of President Edgar Lungu’s position on the matter.

The Civil Society Constitution Agenda (CISCA) says there is no need for government to spend K2 million on the consultations when President Lungu has indicated that he wants Zambia to remain a member of the ICC.

CISCA Vice Chairperson, Pamela Chisanga says the consortium is of the view that besides the President’s position, the majority view of Zambians is that the Country should remain a member of the ICC.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka thPamela chisangais morning, Ms. Chisanga has encouraged Zambians to submit against pulling out of the ICC if government continues with the ongoing consultations.

She says the consortium will equally mobilize civil society organizations in selected districts to go and make submissions against Zambia leaving the ICC.

Ms Chisanga says this is notwithstanding the fact that CISCA finds the consultations on whether Zambia should leave or remain a member of the ICC to be a dirty process.

And Ms. Chisanga says her consortium is amazed by the sensitivity of the PF government to criticism and truth.

She says CISCA is particularly disturbed that to this effect, the Law Association of Zambia is being harassed to the extent of a Private Member’s Bill being moved to have the LAZ Act repealed.

Ms. Chisanga says the consortium believes that LAZ has been a target because it has not skirted around the truth with regards legal matters and interpretation of the Republican Constitution.
