ZRCS records 107 asylum seekers in March

The Zambia Red Cross Society says it has this month recorded a total of 107 asylum seekers in need of humanitarian assistance through the northern transitory border posts of Chiengi, Kaputa, Mpulungu and Nsumbu.

ZRCS Public Relations Manager Bruce Mulenga says this brings the total number of asylum seekers to 588.

He adds that among the latest arrival of asylum seekers are eight unaccompanied minors bringing the total number of unaccompanied minors to 20 since 19th December, 2016.

He says the 107 asylum seekers have since been repatriated to Maheba refugee camp.

Mr Mulenga tells QFM News that the society has since deployed 208 volunteers to the seven border posts with the Democratic Republic of Congo to offer humanitarian assistance to asylum seekers.

He says the society is working together with the Zambian government at District level and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to ensure that the asylum seekers are helped.
