Parliamentary Committee on Health bemoans high levels of dependants

The Parliamentary Committee on Health, Community Development and Social Services, has bemoaned the high levels of dependants among young people in the country.

Committee Chairperson, Dr. Jonas Chanda has recognized the importance of prioritizing the young population by coming up with investments that will suit them in order to harness the Demographic dividend.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting on advocacy for the Demographic Dividend, Dr. Chanda noted that young people need investment in education, Health among other sectors so that they too can help the country’s economy grow and reduce the levels of dependency.

He says investing in family planning, young people, girls and young women are crucial elements in Africa’s quest to harnessing the Demographic Dividend.

He states that the potential of Africa to achieve its desired development status will be enhanced if countries place more emphasis on the Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights of its citizens with a particular emphasis on young people.

Speaking at the same event, Africa Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development Chairperson, Marie-Rose Effa has reiterated the body’s commitment to championing the Demographic Dividend cause at the national and global levels.

Ms. Effa says the organization has recognized the critical link between the population of a country and its ability to achieve sustainable economic development, and that the youth are the most important driving force of sustainable development and demographic transition of the continent.
