Govt to roll out US$65M SWL component

Government says it will roll out the US$65 million Supporting Women’s Livelihoods (SWL) component under the Girls Education, Women’s Empowerment and Livelihoods Project.

Kabanshi ECommunity Development and Social Welfare Minister, Emerine Kabanshi has told Parliament in a ministerial statement that the Girls Education, Women’s Empowerment and Livelihoods Project is a new initiative by the government with support from the World Bank whose development objective is to support the government to increase access to livelihood support for women and girls.

Ms Kabanshi explains that the project became effective in April 2016 upon the signing of an agreement between the government and the World Bank.

She explains that the project has three key components which include; keeping girls in schools, supporting women’s livelihood and the institutional strengthening and systems building.

She says the Ministry of General Education is responsible for the implementation of keeping girls in schools while her ministry will be responsible for implementation of the supporting women’s livelihoods for education support in 16 districts.

Ms Kabanshi says the five year project will be implemented in a phased manner in 51 districts with 11 districts benefiting under phase one, 20 districts in phase two and 20 districts in phase three.
