Government has announced plans to revamp the existing rail transport system in the country order to make it more attractive and competitive for the market.

Transport and Communications Minister Engineer Brian Mushimba says the move will ultimately mean less haulage of bulk and heavy cargo on the roads and subsequently improve the road safety profile and extend the life span of the roads in the country.

In ministerial statement, Mr. Mushimba says government has also earmarked the development of five Greenfield railway projects which include the 389 kilometer Chipata, Petauke, Serenje railway project, 200 Kilometer Livingstone, Kazangula, Sesheke railway project to link Zambia to Walvis Bay  in Namibia and 800 kilometer Kaoma, Sesheke railway .

Mr. Mushimba also cited the 0ne hundred and Twenty-three (123KM) inter mine railway connection on the Copperbelt at an estimated cost of 25 Million US dollars.
