The Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) has welcomed the announced increase in Councillors’ allowances from K700 to K3,000.

LGAS President Christopher Kang’ombe says the increment will go a long way in motivating councilors to work even harder.

Mr. Kang’ombe says the association has been engaged in consultative meetings with the local government minister from October 2016 to champion the cause for improved conditions of service for councilors and are grateful for the revision in the allowances.

He has however, requested that the amount be backdated to September 2016 when the councilors were sworn in.

Mr. Kang’ombe states that while recognizing that a far much better monthly allowance can be considered in future, the K3000 is a starting point.

He adds that the Association will continue lobbying for the establishment of the Emoluments commission that is constitutionally mandated to determine emoluments for councilors.
