UNDP sees potentials in Zambia’s development minerals

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says development minerals have the potential to contribute massively to the growth of Zambia’s economy.

UNDP Assistant Resident Coordinator Ian Milimo says development minerals also have the potential to create jobs for local people as well as alleviate poverty in the country.

Mr. Milimo says it is for this reason that UNDP embarked on a program called Development Minerals Programme in 40 countries with a focus on six countries including Zambia.

He says the 13.1 million pounds program is focused on six countries namely Cameroon, Guinea, Uganda, Jamaica, Fiji and Zambia.

Mr. Milimo says the program also focuses on diversifying the mining sector by encouraging small scale miners to venture into the mining sub sector.

He has also noted the need to address the issue of resource sharing among stakeholders involved in development minerals saying the local people who are on the ground do not benefit much from the minerals.

Mr Milimo said this in Chisamba this afternoon during the official opening of a media training workshop on effective reporting of development minerals.
