Zambia has potential to reduce mealie meal prices to K30 – ZCF

Zambia Cooperative Federation (ZCF) Director General James Chirwa says it is possible to reduce mealie-meal prices from K95 to K30.

Mr. Chirwa says this is possible if farmers and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector come up with new mechanisms and strategies aimed at increasing production.

He says there is an urgent need for the country to improve on the production levels, noting that production by small scale farmers is very low such that they try to maximize on income on the few bags they produce.

Mr. Chirwa tells QTV News that the only solution is to find ways to build the capacity of small scale farmer so that they are able to maximize their production capacity to enable the country have enough maize.

He states that if small scale farmers are able to produce about six tons of maize per hectare, the country will be able to reduce the mealie meal prices.
