Kaputa struck by earthquake

Three people are so far known to have been injured after an earthquake struck Kaputa district and surrounding areas in Northern Province.

According to the US Geological Survey, the 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck 46 kilometres east of Kaputa iInonge-Wina-Veepn the early hours of today.

And Vice president Inonge Wina has confirmed the occurrence of the earth tremors in Kaputa and that three people have been injured.

Responding to a question by Kaputa Member of Parliament Maxas Ng’onga during the Vice president’s question time, who wanted to find out if the government is aware that areas around Kaputa experienced earth tremors which left a trail of destruction in some places, and what help government is rendering to the affected people, Ms Wina said government has not yet received comprehensive information regarding the tremors and is still awaiting full details from the Northern Province permanent secretary.

She however, stated that the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) is on the ground to assess the situation.

The Vice President noted that it is unusual for Zambia to experience tremors of such magnitude as what has happened in Kaputa.
