It is unfair for Zambia to pull out from ICC – Chiti

The Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection (JCTR) says Zambia should not allow itself to be forced to withdraw membership from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Executive Director Leonard Chiti is reminding government not to forget that Zambia is a sovereign state and can do whatever it wants.

Father Chiti states that just as Zambia voluntary joined, the Country can on its own leave the ICC if it finds it not useful to be part of the international court.

In an interview with QTV News Father Chiti says in his view it is however unfair for Zambia to leave the ICC on the basis that the Court is biased.

Father Chiti has argued that this is especially that the people that report cases to the ICC are in fact governments of member states and not the ICC on its own.

He says the important thing for the nation to keep in mind is that Countries subscribe to international organizations such as the ICC because they believe in democracy and respect for human rights.

Father Chiti notes that this entails that the ICC exists to remind governments of member states of, among other things, the duty they have to ensure that citizens enjoys their rights to fullest.
