Adele took home song of the year, record of the year and album of the year at the 59th annual Grammys, beating Beyonce for the wins. The “Hello” singer dedicated her album of the year win to Beyonce, going as far as to break the trophy in half and proclaim after the telecast: “I voted for her. I felt like it was her time to win. What the f–k does she have to do to win album of the year?”

Adele also praised Beyonce during her acceptance speech, telling the crowd, “I can’t possibly accept this award. The ‘Lemonade’ album was just so monumental, Beyonce. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-bearing… We appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light.”

The “Lemonade” superstar sat in the front row smiling and was brought to tears by Adele’s words.

Many music industry watchers and fans felt it was Beyonce’s year to take home album the year. Queen Bey has been nominated for the trophy three times during her career and fans took to social media to say Adele’s win was a mistake.

Some also implied Adele’s win was racist. One Daily Beast writer declared “We talk a lot about #OscarsSoWhite and politics colliding with entertainment awards shows. And there is no awards show that is more culturally embarrassing than the Grammy Awards.” A Vogue writer added, “Is it too early to start a #GrammysSoWhite campaign?”

By Monday morning, #GrammysSoRacist was gaining some attention on Twitter along with #GrammysSoWhite.

But others argued, despite Adele’s protests, it was her turn to win album of the year.
