Angola fought off the challenge of 10-man Sudan to claim a 1-0 victory on day two of the 2016 Cosafa Under-20 Championships, sponsored by PPC, at the Mogwase Stadium in South Africa’s North West province.

Angola scored their goal through Fransisco Sacalumbo near the end of the first half, after which Sudan spurned a chance to equalise when Walaa Mohamed saw his penalty saved by goalkeeper Joao Eduardo.

Sudan had numerous other chances to score and had Khaled Osman sent off for a second bookable offence late in the game.

In the other match in Group C, Mauritius came out on top in the battle of the island nations as they defeated Seychelles 2-0.

It was a tight affair for much of the match but the quality of the Mauritius players shone through as they scored goals in either half via Alex Ferre and Marcus Dimanche.

Both sides finished the game with 10 men after Jean Sarah (Mauritius) and Daryl Louise (Seychelles) received their marching orders.

In the early kick-off in Group D, DR Congo were held to a 0-0 draw by Mozambique.

The Congolese missed a host of chances but also came up against an impenetrable wall in the form of Mozambique goalkeeper Leandro Caiado.

Friday’s fixtures see host South Africa back in action following their 8-0 mauling of Lesotho on Wednesday.

Next in the firing line is Swaziland, who won their opener 2-0 over Botswana. It means the winner in this clash, if there is to be one, can take a giant step towards the semifinals. The match kick off at 2pm.

Zimbabwe will hope to get their campaign back on track when they take on Malawi (5pm).

The Young Warriors lost 5-1 to Zambia in their opener, while Malawi are playing a first game of the tournament in the three-team pool. It means defeat for Zimbabwe and they will be eliminated.

The opening game of the day is in Group C where Mozambique take on Comoros Islands (11am). The Comoros are playing their first game of the competition.

Only the winners of each pool advance to the semifinals. The final will be played on December 16 at the Moruleng Stadium.
