SARW calls for amendment of Mine Act

Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) has called for the amendment of the Mines and Minerals Development Act of 2015.

The organization is also calling on government to review the 2013 Minerals Development Policy to be in tandem with the current prevailing situation in the country.

SARW Zambia Country Coordinator Edward Lange has explained that these pieces of legislation need to be revised in view of the disappearance of the clause in the 2008 Mines and Minerals Act to do with mineral sharing.

Mr. Lange notes that the clause has suddenly disappeared from the current Mines and Minerals Development Act.

He adds that the failure of the referendum on the Bill of Rights is another source of concern, as its approval would have seen the sufferings of the people in mineral resource rich communities alleviated.

Mr. Lange says as things stand people will continue to complain of not benefiting from the country’s natural resources.
