President Lungu implored to stop media persecution

A Consortium of civil society organisations has asked President Edgar Lungu to act and bring to a stop the continued persecution of the media in the country with immediate effect.

In its letter of appeal to the president, the Consortium comprising among other organizations NGOCC, MISA Zambia, Zambia Council for Social Development and Action Aid Zambia is concerned that the recent happenings where the Police seems to be used to stifle the freedom of the press suggest that there is a de-facto Police state in the making in the country.longwe-sara

Consortium Spokesperson Sarah Longwe has told a media briefing in Lusaka today that they have observed that there is in fact a systematic move towards a one party system in the country.

Ms. Longwe who is also NGOCC Chairperson says the consortium wants President Lungu to immediately state his position on the situation.

She says they are asking President Lungu to stop the persecution of the media because he has the absolute power as Head of State.

Ms Longwe notes that the Police in the country appear to have become regulators of the media.
