President Edgar Lungu is today expected to officially open the first session of the twelfth National Assembly amidst high expectations from the Zambian people.

President Lungu’s speech to Parliament will give an indication of his administration’s policy direction for the next five years.

With the country’s economy not doing very well, President Lungu is expected to outline measures his government will put in place to try and resuscitate the country’s ailing economy.

The presidential speech will also provide insights into the kind of national budget the country expects to have in 2017.

With the last five years of the PF Government having focused on infrastructure development in the country which resulted in government borrowing heavily, it is expected that President Lungu will also signal his administration’s economic focus in the next five years.

Away from the pomp and splendor that usually characterizes the ceremonial opening of Parliament, Zambians are expected to be glued to television and radio sets to listen to the president deliver his state of the nation address especially amidst the current economic challenges the country is facing.
