The Zambia Council for Social Development (ZCSD) says while the ambition by President Lungu to construct more houses is a good initiative, the economy is not permissive.

Executive Secretary Lewis Mwape says with the coming of the IMF, it is unnecessary for the government to embark on the construction of new houses.

He says in as much as the country has a housing deficit, the economy is not performing well to allow government to construct more houses in order to halve the deficit.

And Mr. Mwape has observed that the cost of houses being constructed by the National Housing Authority is far beyond the reach of many people.

He says President Lungu should consider entering into partnership with a private company that would provide cheaper housing units which will be affordable to the poor.
