UPND pledges cooperation with ICC

Katuka The opposition UPND says it’s ready to fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and provide countless witness testimonies, photos and video evidence of the PF’s involvement in crimes against humanity.

This follows the move by lawyers Lewis Nathan Advocates to write to the ICC accusing UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, his vice president Geoffrey Mwamba and UPND members of committing crimes against humanity in the country from 11th May,2016 to present.

UPND Secretary General Steven Katuka has described the move to report Mr Hichilema and Mr Mwamba to the International Criminal Court (ICC) as surprising.

He says this given the levels of abuse and discrimination his party and its supporters are currently receiving, as well as the numerous calls by Mr Hichilema for peace and unity at all costs.

Mr Katuka however, states that the UPND welcomes the independent scrutiny of the ICC and those bodies concerned with the protection of human rights in light of the current situation in Zambia.

He says the party is sure that the relatives and loved ones of the many victims of violence to date will welcome any such attempt to identify and punish the culprits, particularly as the party has reported numerous cases to the police but they have been unable to act against the PF Government since they are in power.

Mr Katuka says the party wants an open door on such matters, where no one is allowed to hide violations that infringe the rights of the people with media closures or the co-option of police officers.
