UPND refute Police accusations

KatukaThe opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has denied involvement in the alleged scheme to create an impression that foreign nationals were registered as voters ahead of next month’s elections.

Police investigations have established that the people whose names were published in the Post Newspapers recently as foreign voters are in fact Zambian Nationals of Chief Chanje’s area in Chipata district who surrendered their voter’s cards to a named local UPND official.

But UPND Secretary General Steven Katuka says it is wrong for the police to claim that the UPND is behind the whole scheme of the purported inclusion of foreign nationals in the voter register.

Mr. Katuka says it is shocking that the police want to implicate his party in the issue, stating that the party cannot engage in such an illegal activity.

Mr Katuka says the ECZ and other institutions responsible for issuing out national documents and voters cards should take full responsibility.
