Wydad brush aside Zesco United

Wydad Casablanca secured a 2-0 win over Zesco United in the CAF Champions League, Group A game played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Thursday morning.

The victory took the Moroccan giants to the top of the Group A standings with six poiZesco-Team-1nts, while Zambian side Zesco fell to third spot.

The home side got off to a good start as they took the lead 11 minutes into the game when Walid El Karti headed home to make 1-0 to Wydad.

The goal came from a corner-kick and the visitors were caught totally off guard and the Wydad midfielder was there to put his side into the lead.

Zega Mambo nearly responded with a goal 13 minutes later, but Clatous Chama’s header was well saved by Wydad goalkeeper Zouheir Laaroub.

Jackson Mwanza kept the Wydad defence busy with his speed while in possession of the ball, but Zesco were struggling to beat Laaroub.

Nevertheless, Rouges et Blancs managed to contain Zega Mambo until the match referee blew the halftime break.

The home side doubled their lead five minutes into the second-half when Zesco defender David Owino netted an own goal from Reda Hajhouj’s cross.

Rouges et Blancs shot-stopper Laaroubi produced a fantastic save on the hour mark to deny Zesco their first goal on the night.

Zega Mambo kept pressing Wydad in search of a goal and in the 69th minute, Mwape Mwelwa was brilliantly denied by Laaroubi.

Wydad held onto their lead in the dying minutes of the Group A encounter and they walked away 2-0 winners.
