YALI urges strict scrutiny in NRC issuance

The African Leaders Initiative (YALI) says the inclusion of foreigners in the Country’s voters’ register is an indication of how porous the national registration process is .

YALI does not think a foreigner can be registered as a citizen in the first place if the National Registration Department has strict scrutinizing measures to ascertain whether one is a true Zambian or not.

YALI President Andrew Ntewewe

YALI president Andrew Nthewewe says it is clear that before one obtains a National Registration Card one has to prove that he is a Zambian by producing a birth certificate or an affidavit.

Mr. Nthewewe notes that given the reports of some Malawian nationals registering as Zambian nationals and thereby allowed to register as voters, the question that needs to be answered is how many more nationals of other countries are currently masquerading as Zambians.

He says in view of the short time that is left before the August 11th general elections it is important for the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Zambia Police to quickly deal with these crimes.

Mr. Nthewewe says foreign nationals should not be allowed to take part in any national election that take place in the Country they do not originate from.
