Luka Lungu’s record of scoring four goals in a single match in the MTN FAZ Super League was matched by Jesse Were on Saturday, after the Kenyan scored four goals in Zesco United’s 5-0 win over Mufulira Blackpool at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Lungu’s record had stood since 12th November, 2011 when Power Dynamos defeated Nkwazi 5-0 at Arthur Davies Stadium, when the league was known as the KCM FAZ Super League and had 16 teams.

Four and a half years ago, Lungu bagged a first-half hat-trick when he scored a brace inside the opening five minutes and scored his third goal at the stroke of half time.

He added his fourth goal with 20 minutes remaining on the clock before Felix Nyaende completed the rout at the death.

In similar fashion, Were opened the scoring on 23 minutes and had a goal disallowed three minutes later before Clatous Chama increased the advantage in the 32nd minute.

Were then found the back of the net in the 37th minute and added two quick-fire goals in the 57th and 63rd minutes.

The Kenyan, who was voted the man of the match, was quick to heap praise on his teammates in a post-match interview with fazfootball.com.

“I thank my teammates and I thank God for it. They have all worked for this match and we are taking it one game at a time. So I give thanks to my colleagues for the hard work we are doing.

“What happened today is something that happens on the training ground. The coach is always encouraging us; he pushes everyone so we know what we have to do and we know what we want.

“So in the game we just take it easy and play according to the instructions of the coach.”

Were now leads the top-scorers chart with seven goals which came in victories against Power Dynamos (1), Napsa Stars (2) and Mufulira Blackpool (4).

Walter Bwalya (Nkana) and Steward Chikandiwa (Nkwazi) are tied in second position on the chart having scored five goals apiece.
